UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Junior Jenna Seddon (Galloway, N.J.) may have just made the switch up top this preseason, but it only took two games for her to find pay dirt.
The former defender scored her first-career goal in the 40th minute and gave the Rutgers women's soccer team a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon against Hofstra to close out the Penn State Invitational.
The Scarlet Knights (2-0) won their first two contests of the season for the 12th time in 13 years.
"To get two wins away from home so early in the season is always important. The coaching staff is very proud of the team," said head coach Mike O'Neill. "We wanted to play two good teams early to see the areas of our game we need to improve upon to have a successful season. It was a total team effort on both sides of the ball."
Redshirt junior Gabby Moreno (Severna, Md.) tallied the assist on Seddon's score for the first points of her career. Moreno sat out last season due to injury and saw her first action this weekend since 2013.
The RU backline was exceptional for the second consecutive game, holding the Pride (0-2) to six shots and two-time Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, Leah Galton, off the board in a clean sheet.
Galton scored 17 goals last season and was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year.
Sophomore goalkeeper Casey Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J.) recorded the 12th shutout of her career in a three-save outing. The young Scarlet Knight star is already one shutout shy of tying Jess Janosz (2011-13) for eighth on the program's all-time list.
Junior Jennifer Andresen (Wyckoff, N.J.), who assisted in RU's season-opening win, led RU with three shots on the afternoon.
Rutgers opens its home season next weekend at Yurcak Field with contests on Friday, Aug. 28 against Villanova (8 p.m.) and Sunday, Aug. 30 against Massachusetts (1 p.m.).
Rutgers' men's side will take the field against Sienna (5:30 p.m.) prior to the women on Friday in the first RU soccer doubleheader of the season.
