Reed Honored as MAC Hermann Trophy Candidate

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers women's soccer All-American center back Brianne Reed (Tinton Falls, N.J.) is one of 28 women from the NCAA Division I level to earn placement on the Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List, announced Wednesday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in NCAA soccer presented annually to one male and one female athlete. The winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at the trophy presentation banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
"The fact that Brianne is mentioned on the Hermann Trophy Watch List is pretty special," said head coach Mike O'Neill. "She's in some great company. It's great for her to be recognized as a candidate for the top honor in the country, and I know the players are proud of her, the staff is proud of her, and the University is proud of her."
Reed was selected to the NSCAA All-America Third Team and named First Team All-Big Ten for her defensive efforts as a junior in 2014. She notched a goal and two assists on the year while averaging 88.75 minutes per match.
The Scarlet Knight veteran, one of 13 NSCAA All-Americans from last season on the watch list, helped anchor a defense that boasted the No. 21 goals against average (0.64) in the nation, holding the opposition to 13 goals in 20 matches. Rutgers recorded 11 shutouts a year ago.
Reed joins former program greats Jonelle Filigno (2013), Gina DeMaio (2009, 2010), Erin Guthrie (2009), Carli Lloyd (2002, 2004), and Saskia Weber (1991) as the sixth Scarlet Knight to earn consideration for college soccer's most prestigious award.
Near the end of the collegiate regular season, NCAA Division I coaches whose programs are current NSCAA College Services members will vote on their top choices and the lists will be narrowed down to the top 15 players. College soccer fans will also have the opportunity to participate in the selection process, by voting for their favorite semifinalist in November at the MAC Hermann Trophy website, managed by LockerDome.
From that pool of 30, six finalists (three men, three women) will be chosen for the award. The winners will be announced in January.
