PISCATAWAY, N.J. - On Sunday afternoon in front of a spirited Yurcak Field crowd, Rutgers women's soccer rewrote the record books. The No. 19 Scarlet Knights, with goals from senior defender Erica Skroski (Galloway, N.J.) and sophomore forward Colby Ciarrocca (Montgomery, N.J.), defeated No. 20 UConn, 2-0, to improve to 7-0 for the first time in program history.
"We're proud of anything we accomplish, from what we do in training to what we do in games," said head coach Mike O'Neill. "The fact that we made a little bit of history today is very special. They're a very special group."
Rutgers (7-0) closes the nonconference portion of its schedule unblemished after extending the program's record scoreless streak to 630:00 minutes.
Excellent service from senior midfielder Samantha Valliant (Markham, Ontario) on a corner kick from the near side found the head of Skroski in front, bouncing in net near post to give RU a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
After entering the locker room with a 1-0 lead, the Scarlet Knights continued to attack in the second half, when a quick counter by Rutgers led to the second goal of the game in the 69th minute.
Junior forward Jenna Seddon (Galloway, N.J.) received a ball up the far side as she neared the end line and a UConn defender, crossing it into the middle to find Ciarrocca for the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Casey Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J.) made a season-high five saves to keep the Huskies off the board, denying a point-blank Stephanie Ribiero shot in the 33rd minute that would've tied the game, among others.
Despite allowing a season-high 18 shots to UConn (6-1), RU kept the Huskies and leading scorer Rachel Hill in check. Hill and Ribiero paced the Huskies with five shots apiece.
The Scarlet Knights begin their Big Ten Conference schedule on Friday, Sept. 18 at Maryland. RU will seek redemption from last year's league opener at the Terrapins, a game dropped by RU, 2-0.
