BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. - Northwestern's Nandi Mehta scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute of action Sunday against No. 11 Rutgers women's soccer, defeating the Scarlet Knights, 1-0, in overtime of a hard fought match.
The Scarlet Knights (8-2, 1-2 Big Ten) were outshot, 9-5, in the loss, as sophomore goalkeeper Casey Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J.) made four saves. Junior forward Madison Tiernan (Voorhees, N.J.) paced Rutgers with three shots.
Mehta's score came from the top of the 18 and was assisted by Rachel Zampa. The overtime contest was the first of the season for the Scarlet Knights, who fell to 0-2 all-time against the Wildcats (9-1-2, 3-0-1 Big Ten).
Rutgers returns to Piscataway Friday to face Michigan State at Yurcak Field. First touch is set for 7 p.m. The match will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
