Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker To Northwestern in Overtime
Oct 14 | Men's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior forward Jason Wright gave the men's soccer team a 1-0 first half lead, but the Northwestern Wildcats would come back to force overtime and take a 2-1 victory on Friday night at Yurcak Field.
Wright put the Rutgers (0-10-2, 0-5-2 Big Ten) ahead 1-0 in the game's 23 minute, a lead RU would hold until the final two minutes of regulation. The junior Scarlet Knight posted his fourth goal of the year dribbling into the box and then shooting between a pair of Wildcats into the upper right corner.
The 88th minute, however, saw Northwestern (3-9-1, 2-3-1 Big Ten) knot the score at 1-1. Brandon Mendina collected the loose ball for the unassisted tally into the center of the net as the Scarlet Knights cleared a cross into the box.
The Wildcats notched the golden goal with 44 seconds remaining in the first overtime. From the right side of the field, Camden Buescher sent in a cross to the near post. Controlling the cross was Mike Roberge, who directed the ball to his right at Mattias Tomasino for a shot across the net from six-yards out into the right post.
Both Rutgers and Northwestern ended the evening with 14 shots apiece.
Scarlet Knight keeper David Greczek stopped seven Wildcat shots, while his counterpart Francisco Tomasino logged three saves.
"I give credit to Northwestern for continuing to battle and keep plugging away. We were two minutes away from three points in conference in an important game for both teams," said head coach Dan Donigan. "Our depth has been reduced in the last few days, but those are things we have to manage and get through. It's really unfortunate and we have to put this kind of thing behind us and move on to the next game."
The Rutgers men's soccer team closes out it current four-game homestand with NJIT on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
