Field Hockey Falls at No. 3 Maryland, 4-2

Oct. 29, 2016

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Rutgers field hockey concluded its regular season slate at No.3 Maryland on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 to No. 3 Maryland (15-3, 7-1 Big Ten). RU (9-8, 2-6 Big Ten) got goals from senior Rachel Yaney and freshman Nikki Santore.

"I thought we played a good first half," head coach Meredith Civico explained. "We moved the ball well, we were threatening on the attack, disciplined on defending and in the execution of the game plan. The start of the second half, Maryland caught us off guard on the opening play and we got a little flat after that. But the team fought hard. We're going to take a lot from this game and we'll start preparations for Thursday's game against them to open the Big Ten Tournament."

The Scarlet Knights struck first, scoring just 6:33 into the game. Alyssa Bull sent a long pass across the circle, and Yaney stickhandled around the goalkeeper to put the visitors ahead 1-0.

That lead would stand for five minutes, before Maryland answered back. Off a penalty corner, Carrie Hanks scored an equalizer. The score would remain at 1-1 heading into halftime.

The Terps got the second half off to a quick start with Welma Luus scoring in the opening minute of the frame. They extended their lead to 4-1 on goals from Kelee Lepage and Madison Maguire.

In the waning minutes of the game, Santore tallied for RU. She took a pass Sarah Regn and sent a backhander into the bottom corner of the net. However, the home team held on for the 4-2 victory.

Maryland outshot Rutgers 22-5 and had a 9-0 advantage in penalty corners. Shevaun Hayes made seven saves in the first half, while Amanda Lamb had three stops in the second half.

Next up for the Scarlet Knights will be a return trip to College Park for the Big Ten Tournament. Their quarterfinal matchup Thursday will be a rematch against No. 3 Maryland at 3 p.m. Thursday, which will be televised nationally on the Big Ten Network.
