PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Playing their third straight ranked opponent, Rutgers field hockey was unable to topple No. 10 Michigan on Friday afternoon, falling 3-1 to the Wolverines (8-4, 3-2 Big Ten). Rachel Yaney tallied the lone goal for Rutgers (6-5, 1-3 Big Ten).
"I'm disappointed with the result," head coach Meredith Civico said. "We didn't take enough shots, we didn't generate enough outcomes, and that was a big part of our game plan. I know that we have much better hockey to play. I'm looking forward to getting back out here Sunday and competing. I know that the team can make these adjustments and can move forward. I have a lot of confidence and belief in them to compete and win in the Big Ten."
Michigan took the lead 5:32 into the game, as Courtney Enge knocked in a rebound. The Wolverines converted off a corner in the 28th minute, with Meg Dowthwaite deflecting it in for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Rutgers started the second half with a strong individual effort to tally their goal. Senior Rachel Yaney carried the ball down the field and fired a shot across for the goal.
The Scarlet Knights used the momentum from the goal to try and find an equalizer, but were unable to penetrate the Michigan defense. The Wolverines added an insurance tally from Katie Trombetta with 12 minutes left in the game.
Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Lamb made five saves for Rutgers. Michigan held a 10-7 advantage in shots, including 8-1 in shots on goal. Corners were even at 1-1.
Next up for Rutgers is a home contest Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. Saint Joseph's. The game will be Youth and Junior Knights Day.
