Mazzone, Charalambides Earn B1G Awards

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 8, 2016) - The Big Ten weekly awards keep rolling in for Rutgers men's lacrosse. On Tuesday the conference announced that Christian Mazzone was the league's Defensive Player of the Week and Adam Charalambides was the league's Freshman of the Week.
Both players have previously been recognized by the league this season. Mazzone earns the Defensive Player of the Week recognition for the second straight week, while Charalambides earned a Freshman of the Week all four weeks this season. Thus far this season, Rutgers has earned a total of eight Player of the Week honors from the Big Ten.
Mazzone, a Stony Brook, N.Y. native, excelled on both ends of the field the past week, in which Rutgers went 2-0 with wins over Wagner and Monmouth. The defense allowed an average of just 6.5 goals on the week. Mazzone led the team with 10 ground balls and five caused turnovers on the week. After entering the Monmouth game with just one career goal, the midfielder scored three times to lead the team in the win. All three goals all came off defensive plays, with Mazzone gaining possession in the defensive end, and turning that into a transition goal.
Charalambides, a native of Georgetown, Ontario, continued his stellar redshirt freshman season with four goals and four assists on the week. He had a game-high five points (two goals, three assists) in the win at Wagner. His four assists was a team-high on the week. For the season, the attackman has a team-high 17 goals and a total of 23 points.
The No. 16 Scarlet Knights resume action on Friday night, when the team is at No. 18 Stony Brook.
