PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Philadelphia Force selected Rutgers women's lacrosse assistant coach Katie Hertsch Wednesday evening in the inaugural United Women's Lacrosse League (UWLX) Draft. The 10-week 2016 season is slated to begin on May 28 during NCAA Women's Lacrosse Final Four weekend.
"I'm really excited to be a part of the inaugural women's lacrosse draft," Hertsch said. "It's such a huge step for the women's sport to create an opportunity to play post-college and to initiate new rules that will speed up the game. I'm so grateful to be a representative of the Philadelphia Force and want to thank the UWLX and the Force coaching staff for this amazing opportunity."
Players eligible to be drafted into the league were post-collegiate players at least 20 years of age. Each of the league's four teams - the Baltimore Ride, Boston Storm, Long Island Sound, and Philadelphia Force - will field 17 active players and three reserves, creating 80 opportunities for athletes to play elite, professional lacrosse.
Hertsch joined the Rutgers coaching staff in 2013 and enjoyed a five-year stint with the United States Women's Lacrosse National Team following a dominant defensive career at Hofstra. Hertsch was a member of the U.S. National Team beginning in 2010 and helped lead the country to a gold medal in the FIL World Cup in Oshawa, Canada in 2013.
The 2011 Pride alum recorded 138 ground balls, 70 caused turnovers and 110 draw controls in her collegiate career. Those totals rank in the top-10 all-time of each respective category at Hofstra.
