Softball Swept by No. 21 Minnesota

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 17, 2016) - Despite senior Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.) tacking on a hit and a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Rutgers softball team suffered an 11-1 loss to No. 21 Minnesota on Sunday at the RU Softball Complex.
Rutgers dropped to an overall record of 18-26 and a Big Ten mark of 2-10, while Minnesota improved to 30-12 overall and 11-3 in conference play.
Senior Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) suffered the loss for RU (7-10), while Minnesota's Sara Groenewegen earned the win to improve to 21-5 on the season.
Three Golden Gophers added multiple hits in the contest, as four added a home run each. Sam Macken led the way with a game-high three RBIs on two hits.
Maddox opened the game with a 1-2-3 inning, inducing three consecutive fly outs. However, the Scarlet Knights fell in order in the bottom of the first.
In the top of the second, Minnesota found a six-run surge, fueled by a three-run homer for Macken. Freshman Whitney Jones (Santa Monica, Calif.) took over work in the circle, ending the frame with a groundout to strand a Gopher on.
Senior Melanie Slowisnki (Severn, Md.) would draw a walk to open the bottom of the frame, however, the Scarlet Knights struggled to bring her home.
Although Jones then retired three of four batters to the plate in the third to leave a Minnesota runner on base, the RU bats were unable to cut into the deficit.
The Gophers then added two runs on three hits in the fourth to push its lead to 8-0.
As the Rutgers offense struggled to find a rhythm, Jones posted two quick outs in the top of the fifth with one Minnesota runner on. However, a Scarlet Knight miscue would lead to a two-out, three-run rally for the Gophers and an 11-1 deficit on the board.
In the bottom of the seventh, Todd broke up the no-hitter with a double to left field. Sophomore Meaghan Wells (Piscataway, N.J.) then followed with a hit of her own to send Todd home to deny the shutout.
