PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers women's lacrosse senior attacker Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) was named the Big Ten Conference Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, announced Tuesday by the league office. Barnes scored a career-high six goals, including two game-tying goals and the game-winner, in RU's 13-12 overtime win at home last Thursday against No. 15 Ohio State.
"Halley undoubtedly had an explosive game, but this honor speaks to the impact she has had on our program throughout her career," said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. "Whether it's putting the ball in the back of the net, establishing standards, or taking players under her wing, she has been impacting the growth of this program from day one."
Barnes, who collected her first career Big Ten weekly honor and first offensive player of the week award for the program, is the second Scarlet Knight this season to receive Big Ten weekly laurels. Earlier this year on March 22, rookie Abbey Brooks (Moorestown, N.J.) was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after scoring five goals and an tallying assist against James Madison.
Barnes has started all 15 games this season, is second with 30 goals, and third with 36 points. She is tied for second in the Big Ten with three game-winning goals. Her third goal of the game against OSU was the 100th point of her Rutgers career, making her the second player in as many games to reach that milestone.
RU has now received honorees in all three Big Ten weekly categories. Goalkeeper Candice Dandridge was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on March 16 last season for the first weekly award in program history.
The Scarlet Knights wrap up the regular season at High Point Solutions Stadium on Saturday, April 30 at noon against Michigan. With a win and an Ohio State loss in its season finale, the Scarlet Knights will obtain the No. 4 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament, hosted by Northwestern from May 5-8 in Evanston, Ill.
