Heningburg, Groel Big Ten Players of the Week

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 26, 2016) - After a thrilling comeback victory over No. 17 Penn State Friday night, Rutgers men's lacrosse was recognized with two weekly awards from the Big Ten Conference. Sophomore attacker Jules Heningburg was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, while junior defenseman Chris Groel earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. The Scarlet Knights have now compiled 17 total Big Ten Weekly Awards this season.
Heningburg led the way for the Scarlet Knights Friday with a career-best six goals, and added two assists for a career-high eight points. The Maplewood, N.J. native also added two ground balls and caused a turnover. Heningburg recorded a highlight-reel goal to break a 13-13 tie in the fourth quarter, stealing an outlet pass for the goaltender and firing in the go-ahead goal. The play was featured on ESPN's Sportscenter Top 10 Plays.
On the season, Heningburg has 37 goals, which lead the Big Ten, and 54 points, which is second in the league to teammate Scott Bieda. In the four conference games, Heningburg has a league-best 17 goals and 24 points.
This is the third time this season he has been named a Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, most recently two weeks ago after the game against Michigan. This is the fifth Offensive Player of the Week award to go to Rutgers, as Bieda also claimed the honor twice.
Groel had a strong game defensively against the Nittany Lions. The Los Angeles native had a game-high six ground balls and posted a caused turnover. He also had his first collegiate assist, recording a helper on a Heningburg goal in the second quarter. On the season, Groel has a career-high 26 ground balls and nine caused turnovers. He has helped Rutgers' defense to a conference-leading 433 ground balls and 104 caused turnovers.
This is Groel's first ever conference weekly honor. Rutgers has previously won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week twice this season, both times by Michael Rexrode.
