Softball Drops Rematch at LIU Brooklyn
Apr 27 | Softball
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (April 27, 2016) - The Rutgers softball team dropped a tightly contest rematch at LIU Brooklyn on Wednesday at LIU Field. The Scarlet Knights were edged 4-3 in eight innings after earning a 2-1 victory over the Blackbirds back in March of this season.
LIU generated a 2-0 lead by the third inning, however, RU responded with three runs in the fourth to take over the lead. After the Blackbirds tied up the score, 3-3, in the bottom of the fourth, a pitcher's duel ensued to push the game into extra innings. LIU then plated the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
RU fell to an overall record of 23-27, while LIU improved to 23-24 and extended its win streak to 10 consecutive contests.
Senior Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) (9-11) suffered the loss for RU, while LIU's Sobieski (15-16) earned the win.
The Scarlet Knights were led by senior Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) and sophomore Rebecca Hall (Fairfax, Va.) with two hits each. Sophomore Jacqueline Kott (Burlington, N.J.) highlighted the day with her first collegiate hit and RBI.
Three Blackbirds registered two hits each, including Whitney West, Samantha Offenback and Kayla Gloady.
LIU Brooklyn plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, as a sacrifice fly for Kylie Mulholland sent West home.
Following a scoreless second inning for either side, senior Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) added a two-out double in the third. However, it was not enough to get the RU offense rolling.
The Blackbirds then pushed their lead to 2-0 on a one-out, solo homer for Celinna Cosio in the bottom of the third. Junior Aubrie Levine (Yorba Linda, Calif.) ended the frame forcing back-to-back groundouts to prevent any further damage.
Rutgers countered by claiming the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs on four hits and an error. After the Scarlet Knights loaded the bases, sophomore Jacqueline Kott (Burlington, N.J.) registered her first hit of the season to help send two runs home and tie the score at 2-2. Junior Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.) added the next run for RU, sliding safely into home on an Adriana Burcar (La Palma, Calif.) groundout to put the Scarlet Knights ahead, 3-2.
In the bottom of the frame, LIU Brooklyn knotted the score, 3-3, with a two-out, RBI double for Evie Claussell. Senior Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) then entered the circle, inducing a fly out to help RU escape the inning.
As the Scarlet Knight bats fell silent, Maddox retired nine of 10 batters at the plate across the fifth and sixth innings to keep the score tied at 3-3.
Despite back-to-back hits for Whitley and Hall with two-outs on the board, the Scarlet Knights were unable to use the rally to bring in a run.
Although the Blackbirds got two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, Maddox worked out of the jam with a groundout to push the game into extra innings.
After Rutgers struggled to get a run in in the top of the eighth, LIU put two runners on with one out on the board. An RBI single for Gloady would then plate the game's final run.
