ROSEMONT, ILL. (May 11, 2016) - Senior Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) has been named the Rutgers softball recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, the league announced Wednesday.
The athletes chosen for the Big Ten Conference Sportsmanship Award have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior, in addition to demonstrating good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Huang started all 56 games at second base, maintaining a .360 batting average as the leadoff hitter with a .450 on base percentage. The Paramus, N.J., native led the Scarlet Knight stat sheet in hits (64), walks (29), runs (37) and at bats (178). Huang also added her name to the Rutgers all-time single season charts, sitting tied for second with her 64 hits. Overall, Huang posted a team-best 18 multiple hit games, including six with three or more hits, as well as five multiple RBI games.
Off the field, the supply chain and marketing science major is a two-time All-Conference Academic team member, as well as a 2013-2014 NFCA All-Academic Team honoree. Huang is also an avid participant of the team's relationship with adopted sister Jada through the Friends of Jaclyn organization, as well as through community service outreach, such as volunteering at Elijah's Promise in New Brunswick.
The senior infielder picks up her second conference honor of the season after earning Big Ten Player of the Week on March 21. The leadoff hitter produced a .619 batting average (13-for-21) to guide RU to a 5-2 record on the week.
Huang and the Scarlet Knights open the 2016 Big Ten Tournament as the No. 11 seed and will face No. 6 seed Ohio State on Thursday, May 12. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. live ET on Big Ten Network.
