RETURNING HOME FOR MORE B1G PLAY
The Scarlet Knights are back home after spending the last two weekends on the road as they host No. 5 Maryland on BTN on Tuesday. Dean Linke and Chris Doran will be on the call.
Rutgers is tackling one of its toughest schedules in its history, as seven of RU's first eight opponents were nationally ranked in the preseason polls, including Tuesday's opponent, Maryland.
The Scarlet Knights opened the season with three-straight top 25 opponents, falling to Creighton, Denver and Charlotte, while RU's game at South Carolina, another ranked squad in the preseason polls, was cancelled due to Tropical Storm Hermine.
RU kicked off Big Ten play last Friday night at Michigan State falling 4-0 to the Spartans. The two squads almost entered the half with a scoreless tie, thanks in part to several key defensive plays made by the backline including Ahmad Faheem and Sheldon Mckoy along with goalkeeper David Greczek. However, a free kick moments before the half ended put the Spartans up 1-0 and Michigan State tacked on a trio of goals in the second half.
ABOUT MARYLAND
The Terps enter Yurcak Field at 3-0-2 on the year after playing to a 1-1 draw at No. 4 Indiana on Friday night. Maryland netted the equalizer in the game's 87th minute to force overtime in Bloomington.
Maryland, the two-time defending Big Ten Champions, upset top-seeded Ohio State for the conference title a year ago and played to a 12-5-6 overall record in 2015, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals.
Gordon Wild leads Maryland with 11 points (5G, 1A), with Alex Grognale (2G) and Amar Sejdic (1G, 2A) following on the stat sheet.
In goal, Cody Niedermeier holds a .073 goals against average and .765 save percentage.
LAST TIME VS. MARYLAND
The 2015 regular season came to a close with the Terps ending a seven-game RU win streak as Maryland defeated the Scarlet Knights, 3-1, at Ludwig Field on Nov. 4. Rutgers had been riding a seven-game win-streak, the longest since 1997.
Eryk Williams put the Terps on the scoreboard in the 11th minute. David Greczek came up with a diving one-handed save as Alex Crognale's header was on frame from the center of the goal six-yards out. Williams, however, collected the rebound at the right post to find the clearing at the opposite corner for the 1-0 Terp edge.
Maryland's second goal came in the 24th minute from Tsubasa Endoh. Endoh hit the crossbar from 22 yards out and the ball dropped straight down at the goal line. While it appeared that Greczek came with another big save off the rebound, the sideline official ruled the initial shot that hit the crossbar had crossed the goal line.
The Scarlet Knights cut the deficit to one within minutes of the opening whistle. From the right sideline, Mitch Lurie sent his free kick into the box at the opposite side of the field where Miles Hackett was at the far post to knock in his seventh goal of the 2015 campaign. Hackett's goal saw Rutgers trail 2-1 with 48 minutes left to play.
The Terps, however, extended its lead by two in the 55th minute as Williams registered his second goal of the evening. Maryland's David Kabelik raced into the box where Greczek ran out to stop the surge, getting a hand on the ball to stop the potential shot, but the deflection found its way to Williams to knock the ball into net.
