WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Rutgers field hockey returned to the win column Sunday afternoon at Busch Field with a 2-1 win against William & Mary. The Scarlet Knights (2-2) were powered offensively with two goals from Sofia Walia.
"Today's win was a very solid team effort,' head coach Meredith Civico said. 'We followed the game plan well and executed on our set pieces. I am very pleased with the adjustments we made from Friday's match. We are looking forward to returning home for our next game Thursday against Ohio."
Walia's opening-half goal was the first of her season. She then closed out the opening half with another penalty corner as time expired in the first half.
Goalkeeper Shevaun Hayes made a save for the Scarlet Knights in the first half, while rookie Amanda Lamb took over for the second half and made four stops in her third appearance this season.
The Scarlet Knights nearly captured their second shutout of the year, but the Tribe got on the board in the final minute with a goal from Maria Jose Pastor.
Haley Meade led Rutgers with a career-high five shots as the team outshot the Tribe by a 19-11 margin.
The Scarlet Knights return to Piscataway and begin a three-game homestand on Thursday, Sept. 8 against Ohio.
GAME NOTES
- Walia had her second career two goal game -- with her first coming in 2014, also against William and Mary.
- Rutgers evened the all-time series against William & Mary, 5-5.
- Meade notched a career-high five shots and registered the first helper of her career.
- Regn posted her team-leading second assist of the season.
- Bull recorded her first assist of the season and 15th of her career.
