
Men's Soccer Begins Three-Game Homestand with Lafayette

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's soccer regular season begins to wind down the next two weeks with a three-game homestand. The Scarlet Knights host Lafayette on Wednesday at Yurcak Field at 7 p.m.

STAYING CLOSE TO HOME
The remainder of the Rutgers men's soccer schedule will be home games as the 2017 regular season comes to a close. This week, Rutgers hosts Lafayette for a nonconference matchup at 7 p.m. Then on Sunday, the Scarlet Knights will close out the Big Ten schedule with with Penn State on Senior Day at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed on BTN Plus with Lou Brogno and Glenn Crooks on the call Wednesday.
Rutgers is coming off of a 3-0 loss to Northwestern Sunday afternoon in Evanston, Illinois. Rutgers was even in shots with 13, as freshman Vincent Borden led with four attempts.
Goalkeeper Rafael Pereira made six stops, and his Wildcat counterpart Robbie White saved six as well.
Four days previously, the Scarlet Knights defeated NJIT 2-1, stopping a team that contained the nation's leading scorer. Senior Ryan Peterson and redshirt junior Miles Hackett scored the two goals during the first half, while the defense limited NJIT to four shots on goal.
Rutgers had a strong opening half, outshooting the Highlanders 9-0. Peterson converted a penalty kick for RU's first goal of the game in the 30th minute. The senior forward took the PK after junior Thomas Dovell was taken down inside the left side of the 18.
Four minutes later, Hackett gave the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 advantage by collecting a loose ball from a surrounded Brian Hawkins and had his shot deflected into the low, right corner.
ABOUT LAFAYETTE
The Leopards come to Yurcak Field with a 2-11-0 overall mark and a 1-4-0 record in the Patriot League.
Lafayette lost to rival Lehigh in their last game, 2-0, on Oct. 14. Goalkeeper Brad Seeber ended the night with five saves.
Lafayette overcame Yale, 2-1, in overtime on Oct. 10 with a golden goal in the 100th minute by sophomore Evan Vare. The Leopards had a 12-6 shot advantage.
Vare took a cross from freshman defender Kyle Robbins on the right side near the Yale bench, trapped it with his chest and then volleyed it into the net for the game winner. It was his third goal of the season and first game winning tally.
Freshman forward Martin Ssessanga tapped in the game-tying goal in the 89th minute with an assist from Vare to keep Lafayette alive. It was his second of the season.
Vare leads the Leopards with seven points (3G, 1A) fololwed by senior Christian Moyse with a pair of goals.
In goal, Seeber is holding down a 1.58 goals against average and .714 percentage. Teammate senior Brian Ehrlich, meanwhile, is posting a 2.02 goals against avrage and .650 save percentage.
