Swimming & Diving Hosts Busy Alumni Weekend

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 21, 2017) – Rutgers swimming and diving welcomed back 45 former Scarlet Knights during Homecoming Weekend on Friday and Saturday.
The current Rutgers team joined the alumni in an action-packed weekend, which was sandwiched around the annual Alumni Meet at the Rutgers Aquatic Center on Saturday morning. The group started off with a team meal at Stuff Yer Face before heading to East Brunswick to watch Class of 2003 alum Erin McIntyre's induction to the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame. Following the Alumni Meet, the Scarlet Knights enjoyed a tailgate before witnessing Rutgers football defeat Purdue, 14-12, at High Point Solutions Stadium.
"It was a great time, and a great turnout," said head coach Petra Martin. "It was a diverse representation of our program, with both swimmer and divers returning from the men's and women's team, and from all different eras from the 70s, 80s, 90s and more recent alumni."
Amid McIntyre's Hall of Fame weekend, the program record holder in the 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyle events joined another Hall of Famer in a keynote speech to the current team at the pool. Kelly Harrigan, a Class of 2006 grad and 2016 Hall of Fame inductee, joined in on a talk about Rutgers swimming and diving's past, present and future.
"It was an emotional talk because it really put things in perspective for the current team," Martin said. "They spoke about how special this time is, and to get everything you can out of it. They talked about their legacy, and how each team member is responsible for recruiting the next Hall of Famer at Rutgers."
McIntyre competed at Rutgers from 1999 to 2003 and was the first NCAA Women's Swimming Championships qualifier in program history. A three-time NCAA Championships participant, McIntyre was a 2002 All-American when she placed eighth in the 1,650 freestyle and an Honorable Mention All-American in the 400 individual medley in 2001.
As far as the future goes, the 2017-18 squad returns to competition on Friday, Oct. 27 for a tri-meet at Illinois with Northwestern.
