PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Major League Lacrosse announced its 23-man protected rosters on Monday, October 2. Players protected by their club are not subject to being selected in the 2018 MLL Supplemental Draft on Friday, December 8. Kris Alleyne, Scott Bieda, Chris Mattes, Joe Nardella, and Justin Pennington were on the list.
Alleyne was protected by the Rochester Rattlers. He made his pro debut last season with 15 saves against the Florida Launch. He graduated RU as 5th all-time in program history with 545 saves.
Bieda was protected by the Boston Cannons. The 2016 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year had seven goals and 15 assists in 12 games in his first professional season.
"He is a great initiator, feeder, and goal scorer," said Cannons Head Coach Sean Quirk. "We love his blue-collar mentality and work ethic."
Mattes was protected by the Florida Launch. A USILA All-American and First Team All-Big East selection as a faceoff specialist for Rutgers, he is 539-of-1126 at the faceoff 'X' in his 43-game MLL career. He recently joined the staff of the New England Patriots.
Nardella joins his former teammate Bieda on the Cannons' protected roster. A Third Team All-American, First Team All-Big Ten selection and 2015 Big Ten Specialist of the Year, Nardella was 214-of-407 (52.5%) on faceoffs last season, earning a spot in the MLL All-Star Game.
"It all starts at the face-off X and I believe we have the best in the business in Joe Nardella," said Cannons General Manager Kevin Barney.
Pennington is on the roster of the Atlanta Blaze. A 2015 MLL All-Star, Pennington was a two-time All-American at Rutgers. He has played professionally since 2010, scoring 52 goals and adding 20 assists in 86 professional games.
