Scarlet Knights Boast Team GPA Over 3.0 For Fourth-Straight Season
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's soccer team was honored with the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 academic year, it was announced on Thursday by the organization.
The Scarlet Knights were one of a total of 814 collegiate soccer teams (282 men, 532 women) who posted a 3.0 or higher grade point average during the 2016-17 academic year. Both the RU men's and women's soccer teams earned the award, one of 196 schools with both their men's and women's programs recognized.
"Our staff has always placed academic success at the top of our list of importance," said head coach Dan Donigan. "We maintain high expectations and expect commitment and accountability not only on the field, but in study hall, tutoring and attending class. This award is a result of all these variables.
"Not only do the members of the team deserve credit, but certainly my staff, the tutors, John Paxton, our academic advisor, and Scott Walker, our Executive Director of Academic Support Services, for their hard work with our student-athletes as well. There are many individuals that support our student-athletes and they all deserve recognition for this achievement. I personally, thank all of them for their help to make our program what it is all about.
"I am incredibly proud of all our academic and off-the-field achievements. Guys create habits on the field and in the classroom and they have proven they have a work ethic in both areas.
This is what our program and Rutgers University Athletics is all about with all of our student-athletes across the board."
Rutgers has earned the team academic award from the coaches association for the fourth-straight year and six of the last seven seasons.
