Men’s Hoops Hosts CCSU Sunday Afternoon
Nov 11 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY - Rutgers hosts Central Connecticut State on Sunday (Nov. 12) in a 2:30 p.m. tip-off at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights will be working to improve to 10-0 in non-conference home games under head coach Steve Pikiell. Both the Scarlet Knights and Blue Devils played Friday evening and begin their seasons with three games over five days. Direct weekend shuttles will be available for Rutgers students and the Bachata Club will perform at halftime.
Sunday's game will be streamed live via the web on BTN Plus, with Dominick Savino calling the action and Mark Peterson providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Jerry Recco will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
Rutgers hosts CCSU for a third straight season and has a 2-0 advantage in the series. Last year, RU shot a blistering 64.8 percent (35-of-54) and outscored CCSU 60-14 in the paint in a decisive 79-37 victory at the RAC. The shooting percentage marked RU's best since a 69.6 percent (32-of-46) performance in a 95-87 win over Saint Joseph's on Feb. 13, 1991. Meanwhile, Rutgers limited the visitors to a 25 percent (14-of-56) mark from the field, the lowest for an opponent since Pittsburgh shot just 21.1 percent (12-of-57) in a 62-39 RU win on Jan. 11, 2012.
Pikiell served as an assistant coach at CCSU under Howie Dickenman from 1997-01 and helped the team win a NEC title and reach the NCAA Tournament in 1999-00.
Issa Thiam had his first career double-double, registering 19 points and 11 rebounds, to help Rutgers to a 94-38 win over CCNY at the RAC in the 2017-18 season opener. The 56-point win tied the largest margin of victory in program history. Rutgers led from start to finish, building its advantage to as much as 61 points, while shooting 61.3 percent (38-of-62). The Scarlet Knights dominated down low, out-rebounding the Beavers 60-20 and establishing a 68-8 advantage in points in the paint. It marked the most rebounds in a game since Dec. 7, 1992, when RU grabbed 74 against Keene State. Thiam was 7-of-13 from the field and was joined in double-digits by Deshawn Freeman (16), Corey Sanders (12) and Geo Baker (10). Freeman was a perfect 7-of-7 shooting, while both Sanders and Baker deposited 5-of-9.
Under the leadership of second-year head coach Donyell Marshall, CCSU suffered an 85-84 overtime loss at Hartford. Junior Tyler Kohl had 21 points and eight rebounds in his first game for CCSU, which was picked ninth in the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll. A UConn alum along with Pikiell and Associate Head Coach Karl Hobbs, Marshall was a player at UConn when both Pikiell and Hobbs served as assistant coaches in Storrs under Jim Calhoun.
