Nov 22 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY - Rutgers will work to improve to 14-0 in non-conference home games under Steve Pikiell when it welcomes The American Conference-member East Carolina on Friday for a 1 p.m. tip-off. It will mark the second meeting between the Scarlet Knights and Pirates, with ECU winning the first match-up, 79-74, on Nov. 14, 2001. The contest is RU's third in six days and the fourth of eight this season to be played on a two-day turnaround.
It will be "Black Friday Knights" versus ECU, with fans encouraged to wear black. A Black Friday shopping package raffle will take place for Rutgers students. Halftime will feature a Black Friday On-Court Challenge.
Rutgers is sixth or better in the NCAA statistics in eight categories: scoring defense (1st), win-loss % (t-1st), personal fouls per game (2nd), field goal % defense (4th), total rebounds (4th), total blocks (4th), total rebounds per game (6th) and rebound margin (6th). Rutgers leads the Big Ten in 10 categories.
Friday's game will be streamed live via the web on BTN Plus, with Lou Brogno calling the action and Danny Breslauer providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Jerry Recco will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
Geo Baker shot 10-of-14, including 7-of-10 from behind the arc, to boost Rutgers to an 83-54 win over Bryant Tuesday evening at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights issued 16 blocks. Baker's seven three-pointers were the most for an RU rookie since Todd Billet made eight three pointers versus Notre Dame on Jan. 18. 2000. Baker's 29 points signaled the most for a Rutgers freshman in a regulation contest since Billet scored 31 in that same contest, a 76-51 victory. Baker was joined in double digits by Corey Sanders (18) and Mike Williams (10). Sanders was 8-of-14 from the field, while Williams deposited 5-of-10 shots off the bench.
Under the leadership of eighth-year head coach Jeff Lebo, ECU is coming off a 72-69 home win over Cleveland State on Monday. Friday will mark the Pirates first road contest of the season. B.J. Tyson and Kentrell Barkley lead the team in scoring with 17.0 and 15.0 averages, respectively. Isaac Fleming ranks 20th nationally and first in the AAC in assists (6.5) for ECU, which was picked 11th in the AAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
