Competitive slate features six teams that competed in NCAA Tournament last season
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's lacrosse has finalized its 2018 schedule, as the Scarlet Knights will play six teams that qualified for the 2017 NCAA Tournament, including national champion Maryland and Final Four participant Penn State.
Six opponents finished the 2017 season ranked in the final IWLCA Coaches Pol – No. 1 Maryland, No. 6 Penn State, No. 9 Cornell, No. 10 Penn, No. 13 Northwestern and No. 15 James Madison.
In total, the 17-game schedule features eight home contests at High Point Solutions Stadium and nine on the road. RU's home schedule includes three Big Ten matchups with Penn State (March 17, noon), Michigan (April 12, 7 p.m.) and Johns Hopkins (April 28, 1 p.m.). RU's matchup with the Wolverines is set to televise nationally on BTN.
Rutgers' first three games of 2018 take place on the road – Feb. 10 at Temple (1 p.m.), Feb. 13 at LIU Brooklyn (4 p.m.) and Feb. 17 at Monmouth (1 p.m.) – before the Scarlet Knights host Delaware at HPSS on Feb. 24 (3 p.m.). The game will be a doubleheader with the Rutgers men's lacrosse team, which plays Fairfield at noon.
RU returns six of its top nine scorers from a year ago, including Nicole Kopyta, who was second on the team last season with 24 goals. Two-time All-Big Ten selection Amanda Casten also returns for the Scarlet Knights, as does goalie and team MVP Bianca Dente, who finished with an 11.93 GAA and 28 ground balls to lead the program.
Rutgers wrapped up its successful 2017 season with an 8-8 record, which included a 2-4 mark in Big Ten Conference play. The Scarlet Knights recorded a ranked victory over then-No. 18 James Madison and collected conference wins against Ohio State and Michigan during the spring.
