Bertotto & Walkowiak are victorious on Day 2
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 4, 2017) – Rutgers swimming and diving claimed two dual wins, two event victories and four improved season standards as the two-day penta-meet wrapped up on Saturday inside Rutgers Aquatic Center.
The Scarlet Knights defeated Georgetown (235.5-117.5) and Seton Hall (275-78), while finishing short of Pittsburgh (219-134) and Villanova (210.5-142.5).
"I think we were pretty tired yesterday, and that may have resulted in some mistakes," said head coach Petra Martin. "We talked about it and fixed it this morning. There was a good response and good changes, and I was happy with that. They thought about things differently today, and grew up a little bit over night."
Sophomore Francesca Bertotto defeated 19 opponents in the 500-yard freestyle for Rutgers' first event win of the day. Her time of 4:57.51 set a new personal record, a new season time standard in the event, and went down as her first collegiate event victory. Almost simultaneously, the 1-meter diving results were finalized with senior Addison Walkowiak sweeping the weekend's diving events with 308.35 points and a first place finish over the field of 16.
Walkowiak's 1-meter score is the best in the Big Ten this season and 24th best in the country. She won the 3-meter event on Friday evening, and has posted NCAA Zone 1 Championship qualifying scores in 5-of-6 events early in the 2017-18 season.
"Addison is doing everything right at this stage, and we certainly won't be complaining seeing her name on the top of the Big Ten rankings this week," said head diving coach Frederick Woodruff. "We can't put too much stock in it, because all that matters is when they go head-to-head right next to each other at championships. But we're in a good position."
Sophomore Federica Greco was at the forefront of the Scarlet Knights becoming faster week after week. Greco took nearly two seconds off the team's best 400-yard individual medley of the season in 4:26.69, which is also a career best. She did that from heat 2-of-3, where she cleared her competitors by over four seconds.
Greco and junior Francesca Stoppa looked nearly synchronized swimming in adjacent lanes in the 100-yard butterfly, where Stoppa posted her season-best time of 55.93 seconds to place third of 19 in the event. Greco was a touch behind in fourth place and 56.08 seconds.
Junior Vera Koprivova also lowered her best 200-yard backstroke time of the season, placing third of 18 in a time of 2:01.38.
Notable finishes included a third place standing for the 200-yard medley relay team as Koprivova (back), senior Larissa Neilan (breast), Greco (fly) and Lawlor (free) touched in at 1:46.01; Lawlor took fourth of 22 in the 100-yard freestyle; and Neilan and freshman Delaney Carey finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke.
The Scarlet Knights are back in action at home for the 10-team Frank Elm Invitational on Nov. 17-19 at the Rutgers Aquatic Center.
