Rutgers Great & TFC Goalkeepers Coach Assisting on Club's First MLS Title
TORONTO, Ontario – Former Scarlet Knight goalkeeper Jon Conway was on the sidelines as Toronto FC captured the 2017 MLS Cup title on Saturday evening.
Conway, in his second season as Toronto FC's goalkeepers coach, saw his club play to a 2-0 shutout of Seattle Sounders FC for TFC's first league title in front of 30,584 at a sold out BMO Field. It was the third trophy TFC raised this season having already secured the MLS Supporters' Shield and the Canadian Championship.
One of the best and most intimidating goalkeepers to play "On The Banks", Conway appeared in 72 contests registering 24 shutouts and 275 saves helping Rutgers to three NCAA Tournaments from 1996-99.
The Scarlet Knight netminder earned several All-America awards following the 1999 season, in which Rutgers won the BIG EAST Regular Season title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Conway turned in one of the best single-season efforts in RU history, recording a 0.88 GAA, including a league-best 0.48 mark in BIG EAST play. He turned away 11 shots in a 0-0, double-overtime tie with No. 8 St. John's on his way to six shutouts on the season. Conway earned Second Team NCSAA honors, as well as Second Team honors from Soccer Times and Soccer America. He was also chosen to participate in the Umbro Select All-Star Classic following the season.
Conway went on to be a third-round selection of the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2000 MLS SuperDraft. He had a successful career in Major League Soccer, where in five seasons with the Earthquakes, Conway was part of two MLS Cup Championship teams. He was traded to the New York MetroStars, who eventually became the Red Bulls, and remained with the club for four seasons. He also played for Chivas USA (2009), Toronto FC (2010) and the Chicago Fire (2011) before retiring as a player at the conclusion of the 2011 season.
