FAIRFAX, VA. – No. 14 Rutgers women's soccer registered its sixth straight shutout with a 2-0 victory over George Mason on Friday night at George Mason Stadium. Freshman midfielder
Alexa Ferreira and senior forward
Colby Ciarrocca added second half goals, while redshirt junior goalkeeper
Casey Murphy recorded four saves to earn the shutout.
"Our team play is getting better every game," said Ferreira. "We are moving the ball better and trusting each other more. We played against a good team and came out with the win.
"It felt amazing to have scored my first goal at Rutgers. I think that once that goal came everyone's energy boosted and we started to play with more edge. It feels great to be 6-0, but our main focus is the next game."
Rutgers (6-0-0) held solid possession of the ball early in the first half, registering three corner kicks in the first nine minutes of the contest. However, a stalemate on the pitch would ensue as the score remained tied 0-0 with George Mason (0-6-0) at halftime.
Returning from the break, the Scarlet Knight offense found its rhythm, as Ferreira would score her first career goal in the 48th minute. Freshman forward
Amirah Ali broke away down the field after a turnover, sending a forward pass to Ferreira who shot from 15 yards out to the lower right side for the 1-0 Scarlet Knight edge.
Ferreira remained hot for RU, setting up Ciarrocca for a goal in the 80th minute. Ciarrocca scored from 10 yards out off the assist from Ferreira to cushion the RU lead at 2-0.
Murphy would go on to record two more diving saves in the game's final minutes to secure the clean seat for RU.
Rutgers remains on the road with a trip to No. 15 Georgetown on Sunday, Sept.10 at 1 p.m. ET. The contest will be a rematch from the 2016 NCAA Tournament Second Round.
