Oct 12 | Women's Cross Country
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Rutgers women's cross country team raced at the Penn State National Open (6K) at the Blue-White Golf Course in its final race before heading to the 2018 Big Ten Championships later this month.
Sophomore Olympia Martin led Rutgers in a field that featured seven teams either ranked or receiving votes in the USTFCCCA Poll. The Ridgewood, New Jersey native was only five seconds off her PR and clocked in at 21:36.
Junior Nadia Saponara was the second Scarlet Knight over the finish line and was also just shy of a PR. The Ringoes, New Jersey product was two seconds off her personal best and finished in 22:18.
Classmate Lou Mialhe picked up a new PR for the second-straight race besting her previous top time set at the Paul Short Run at the end of September by a second with a time of 22:31.
Also racing for the Scarlet Knights on Friday were sophomore Kiera Nealon (22:34), junior Stephanie Mauer (22:39), sophomore Kaitlyn Bragen (23:03) and junior Emma Bergman (22:03). Bragen's time was two seconds behind her PR.
"I thought the ladies ran pretty well today as all of them established new PRs for this course," said head coach James Robinson. "It was a very challenging competition with seven nationally ranked teams. We were able to defeat two teams that were ranked ahead of us in the most recent USTFCCCA Regional poll."
The Rutgers women's cross country team will see the course again in November at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Scarlet Knights, however, will begin preparation for the Big Ten Championships being hosted by the University of Nebraska set for Oct. 28.
