Scarlet Knight awarded both weekly honors following final regular season weekend
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Freshman goalkeeper Meagan McClelland earned both Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week and Freshman of the Week accolades, the league announced Thursday. It marks McClelland's second time receiving each award, bringing her career total to four conference weekly honors.
McClelland finished the regular season with a Big Ten-leading 0.48 goals against average in league games only, guiding Rutgers to its highest ever finish in the conference standings at second place.
In an NCAA record 11th overtime of the year, McClelland recorded three saves to shutout Michigan State on the road for her fifth league clean sheet and eighth of the year. The 1-0, double-overtime victory at MSU kept RU unbeaten in its extra time matches with a record of 6-0-5.
Against Purdue in the regular season finale, the Kearny, New Jersey, native stopped two of three shots on goal to keep Rutgers unbeaten in conference play at home with a mark of 4-0-1.
McClelland's overall GAA of 0.60 also led the league, ranking 27th in the NCAA. Her eight shutouts are at 22nd in the nation.
It marks just the second time a Scarlet Knight has earned two weekly honors in the same week. The last time was by former Rutgers goalkeeper Casey Murphy in 2014, earning Big Ten Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week recognition on Oct. 13. The Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week accolade is a new honor added this year.
McClelland earned her first conference honor as Freshman of the Week on Oct. 2 before being named Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 9.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Sunday, Oct. 28 for a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal match with Minnesota. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET at Yurcak Field.
