Scarlet Knights named Academic Team for fifth straight year; Seven named All-America Scholar-Athletes
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 5, 2018) – Rutgers softball has earned its fifth consecutive distinction as an Easton/NFCA Academic Team by recording a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the 2017-18 academic year, while seven Scarlet Knights have been honored as Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes for achieving a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the period.
"The NFCA sets a high bar for academic performance, and to have this many individuals honored is impressive and a point of pride for our program," said head coach Kristen Butler. "The team award streak is also telling of the culture and commitment to success off the field."
The rankings and honors recognize the academic prowess of softball teams across the Association's membership categories. Rutgers was one of 111 Academic Teams recognized in NCAA Division I for their work in the classroom in 2017-18.
Joining 1,311 All-America Scholar-Athletes from NCAA Division I are Rutgers graduates Jacqueline Kott and Sierra Maddox, seniors Nicolette Anico, Jess Hughes and Whitney Jones, junior Anyssa Iliopoulos, and sophomore Taylor Manno.
Kott graduates with four consecutive All-America Scholar-Athlete awards, while Maddox moves on with three straight. Anico and Jones each earned their second honors. Anico, Iliopoulos, Kott and Maddox were also all named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars for GPA's of 3.7 or higher during the same year.
Nine Scarlet Knight softball players made the Academic All-Big Ten list this past spring for 3.0 cumulative GPA marks.
