COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 11 Rutgers (13-6) field hockey made its first NCAA Tournament in 32 years, but were unable to extend the season, falling 5-0 to No. 5 UConn (19-3).

UConn had a 17-7 advantage in shots and 6-3 in corners. Gianna Glatz made seven saves for the Scarlet Knights, while Abby Regn had a defensive save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UConn got onto the scoreboard first, tallying 10 minutes into the contest. Svea Boker had the goal putting the Huskies in front.

Five minutes later, Austyn Cuneo make a great defensive play for Rutgers. Glatz made a save, and the ball rolled dangerously towards the empty side of the net. Cuneo dove and swatted it away to clear the danger.

The Huskies added a second goal 20 minutes into the opening stanza. Boker carried the ball to the right post, where Rutgers' defense swarmed her. She sent a pass in front the Cecil Piper shot in for her 23^rd goal of the season.

UConn added a third goal off a penalty corner, with Karo Kueskes sending a bouncing ball into the net. Another tally for the Huskies, an unassisted score for Maddy Wray, make the margin 4-0 at halftime.

The Scarlet Knights amped up the pressure coming out of the intermission. Linde van Schaik and Gianna Mancini each had good chances in the first 15 minutes of the stanza, but their shots were turned aside by UConn goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher.

The Scarlet Knights earned three penalty corners, but could not convert, and that margin remained for the final score.

QUOTABLE

"I am incredibly proud of this team and the effort they put into not only today but the whole season. It's obviously a very disappointing result, but being here, in the NCAA Tournament, and playing the defending National Champions was a great experience. It's one we will learn from and hopefully we will use it achieve even more in 2019. I am so grateful to the players, staff, administration and family of the Rutgers Field Hockey program for a truly historic season. I can't thank them enough for everything they have done to help us achieve success this season."

POSTGAME NOTES

Abby Regn had a defensive save, the freshman's fourth of the season. The Scarlet Knights had 11 defensive saves on the year, leading the Big Ten.
Daphne Groothuis led the team this season with 12 goals, 13 assists and 37 points. On RU's single-season record book, she finished third in assists, sixth in points and tied for seventh in goals.
Through two seasons, Groothuis has 19 goals, 21 assists and 59 points. She is seventh all-time at RU in assists, tied for seventh in points and 12^th in goals.
Linde van Schaik finishes her career with 24 goals, 17 assists and 65 points. She is 7^th all-time at Rutgers in goals and points, and 12^th in assists.
Rutgers ends the season 13-6. This was the third most wins in a single season in program history.
The Scarlet Knights made their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1986.
