Scarlet Knights set for five non-conference tournaments, eight Big Ten series and 15 home games
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 3, 2018) – Rutgers softball has released its 2019 season schedule, featuring five non-conference tournaments, eight Big Ten series and 15 home contests in Piscataway as part of the 58-game slate.
The Scarlet Knights will play at least 21 games against 2018 NCAA Championships qualifiers, including a stretch of 10 in a row from March 22 through April 7 against Northwestern, Fordham, Michigan and Ohio State. Rutgers will face five conference champions from 2018 in Fordham (Atlantic 10), Liberty (Big South), Monmouth (Metro Atlantic), Jacksonville State (Ohio Valley) and McNeese State (Southland).
Head coach Kristen Butler will make her Rutgers coaching debut on Friday, Feb. 8 for the 2019 season opener against 2018 Ohio Valley Conference champion Jacksonville State at the Mercer Invitational in Georgia, the first of two games against the Gamecocks during opening weekend Feb. 8-10. Rutgers will also play the hosting Bears twice, along with Army.
The Scarlet Knights will receive an early test at their second tournament of the spring, the Texas A&M Invitational from Feb. 15-17. All five games are against conference champs and NCAA tournament qualifiers. Rutgers plays one at the hosting Aggies, who advanced to the Super Regionals last spring, and two each against Southland champion McNeese State and Big South winner Liberty.
Rutgers rolls into the Sunshine State for the FIU Tournament against Columbia, Monmouth and Florida International from Feb. 22-24 before the Liberty Spring Classic from March 1-3 against Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, Cleveland State and the season's third and final matchup against the hosting Flames in Lynchburg, Virginia.
East Tennessee State hosts the Buccaneer Classic from March 8-10 with Tennessee Tech, Evansville and Siena lined up. Rutgers' final tournament will take place from March 15-17 at James Madison in Virginia with opponents and times yet to be announced.
Sandwiched in between the final two tournaments, the 2019 home opener at the RU Softball Complex is slated for March 12 and a doubleheader against Howard at 2 and 4 p.m. Other midweek non-conference action is scheduled against Fordham (March 27, 3 p.m.) and LIU Brooklyn (May 1, 4 p.m.)
Big Ten play kicks off on the road at Northwestern (March 22-24), the first of three conference series away from home. Rutgers also travels to Ohio State (April 5-7) and Penn State (April 12-14).
The Scarlet Knights host Big Ten series against Michigan (March 29-31), Iowa (April 19-21), Maryland (doubleheader April 23) and Michigan State (May 3-5).
The 2019 Big Ten Championships will take place at Indiana from May 9-12.
