WALLACE, N.C. – Senior co-captain Emily Mills carded a four-under par 212 (76-69-67) to win the 83-player River Landing Classic, played Monday and Tuesday on the par 72, 6,082-yard River Course at River Landing. The Colts Neck (N.J.) native helped the Scarlet Knights tie for sixth place in the 14-team field with an 887 (304-296-287) total.
"I was hitting it close with my irons and took advantage of those birdie putts today," said Mills. "I feel good moving into the rest of the season after our play here."
Mills was minus four on par three holes, three-under on par fives and had 12 birdies to win her third career tournament. She also won her initial collegiate event, the 79-player Bucknell Women's Invitational with a 220 (70-76-74) in September 2014, and the 70-player Rutgers Women's Invitational with a 220 (74-71-75) in September 2016. The three-time team captain and 2018 Wayne Duke Postgraduate Scholarship winner is the program's career leader in scoring average, birdies and par or better rounds.
RU's third-round 287 tied for the best round in program history with the second round of this past fall's Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational and the first round of the 2016 Big Ten Championship.
"Today was a fun day for our team," said Rutgers head coach Kari Williams. "Carrie-Ann (Lee) and Emily played phenomenal golf out here, being aggressive at pins and making birdies around the course. Ana (Cortes) continued her consistent play for us and Lori (Char) bounced back with a hard fought 76 today. This event took a full team effort and we are excited to compete again next week in Hawaii."
Sophomores Ana Cortes and Carrie-Ann Lee also placed among the top half of the field, tying for 33rd with 224 totals. Lee (77-77-70) had an eagle in the final round and registered 34 pars. Cortes (75-75-74) was minus two on both par three and par five holes with seven birdies.
Freshmen Harriet Allsebrook and Lori Char rounded out the Rutgers scorecard. Allsebrook tied for 53rd with a 231 (76-75-80) and Char tied for 63rd with a 236 (81-79-76).
The Scarlet Knights placed ahead of seven programs, including state rival Seton Hall, and finished five strokes out of fifth place. Campbell won the tournament with a seven-under 857 (286-286-285), besting second place and tournament co-host East Carolina by 11 strokes.
Rutgers returns to the links at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, hosted by the University of Hawaii, in Manoa from March 13-14.
