
Mazzone and Rexrode named Scholar All-Americans

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Two graduating seniors from Rutgers men's lacrosse were recognized as Scholar All-Americans by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). Christian Mazzone and Michael Rexrode were honored for their dedication and commitment both on the field and in the classroom.
Mazzone excelled as a senior captain this season. The midfielder from Stony Brook, N.Y. was named an Honorable Mention All-American and Second Team All-Big Ten selection with 29 goals, 38 points and 40 ground balls. He was drafted in the Third Round of the Major League Lacrosse Draft by the Ohio Machine. A Journalism and Media Studies Major, the redshirt senior held a 3.2 cumulative GPA and was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Rexrode was previously a Big Ten Medal of Honor Recipient, in addition to a Second Team All-American, First Team All-Big Ten and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. The team captain was a Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American and First Team All-ECAC, who was drafted in the Second Round of the Major League Lacrosse Draft by the Florida Launch. The Leesburg, Va. native held a 3.8 GPA as a Civil Engineering major and was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
With these two selections, Rutgers now has 11 Scholar All-Americans in program history, with seven of those coming in the past four years. Last season, Connor Murphy earned the accolade. He joined Scott Bieda and Zack Sikora (2016), Joe Nardella and Campbell Sode (2015), Will Mangan (2012), Brian Shemesh (2011), Jamie Lovejoy (2005) and Jeff Duca (2003).
The USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee selects an overall team representing Division I, II and III.
