Moneme’s Golden Goal Grabs Road Win for Women’s Soccer at Minnesota

Scarlet Knights remain unbeaten on the road and in Big Ten play

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. –  With less than five minutes in the second overtime period, senior midfielder Adora Moneme netted the golden goal to capture a 2-1 road victory at Minnesota. The victory helped keep RU unbeaten in conference action and on the road this season. 
 
The Scarlet Knights improved to a record of 7-1-4 overall, 3-0-1 in Big Ten action, and 3-0-1 on the road. The Golden Gophers fell to 7-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the league.
 
QUICK STATS
Sophomore forward Amirah Ali scored RU's first goal for her eighth of the season. Moneme contributed the third goal of her career and first since 2015. Junior midfielder Nicole Whitley added her seventh assist of the year.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Meagan McClelland recorded a career-high five saves to keep RU unbeaten in conference action and on the road.
 
Minnesota's goalkeeper Maddie Nielson registered four saves, while Emily Heslin added the goal.
 
THE MATCH
In the 13th minute of the match, Ali converted on a penalty kick, scoring inside the right post to give RU a 1-0 lead.
 
 
Minnesota tied things up with a goal in the 41st minute, as corner kick from McKenna Buisman set up the Heslin goal.
 
Seconds later, a huge stop by McClelland would keep the score balanced, 1-1, entering halftime.
 
 
The Scarlet Knights and Gophers played through a physical second half, remaining locked at 1-1 and moving into overtime.
 
Rutgers led Minnesota in shots, 4-2, across the overtime periods, while McClelland notched a save in each stanza to keep the match balanced into the final minutes.
 
With less than five minutes on the clock in double overtime, Whitley crossed to Ali just outside the box. Moneme took the shot from the top of the key, netting the golden goal inside the left post.
 
 
UP NEXT
Rutgers returns home to host No. 17 Northwestern for a Thursday night matchup on Big Ten Network. Match time is set for 8 p.m. ET at Yurcak Field.
 
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Rutgers last six matches have entered overtime, as the Scarlet Knights hold a record of 3-0-3 in those contests. Overall, RU is 3-0-4 in overtime matches this year.
