Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Late Goal Gives No. 23 Field Hockey 1-0 Win over Cornell

PISCATAWAY, N.J – No. 23 Rutgers field hockey got a goal from Austyn Cuneo with five minutes to play for a 1-0 win over Cornell (0-3) Friday afternoon to improve to 4-0 on the season. RU dominated the statistical categories, outshooting the Big Red 24-3 and leading 14-0 in corners.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Scarlet Knights kept the pressure up throughout the entire game. In the second half, the team continually pushed for a goal, with a 15-2 advantage in shots and nine corners in the second frame. On the team's 14th corner of the day, with just over five minutes remaining in the game, Linde van Schaik inserted the ball to the top of the circle. Kerrie Burns was there with the stick stop, and Cuneo blasted the ball home for the game's only goal.

QUOTABLE

Redshirt junior Austyn Cuneo on her game-winning goal:

"We had to read the defense on that play. The way they came out, we've trained against that. My first instinct was just to go right to goal. When it went in, there was a little bit of relief. At the same time, there was still pressure to play at high intensity for the last five minutes to maintain that lead."

Head Coach Meredith Civico on the game-winning goal:

"The message at halftime to the team was to just relax. As the game went on, we just weren't scoring, so we had to take a deep breath. We knew we needed to be more composed. On that corner, we just wanted Austyn to get a good clean strike on the ball. We did, and we scored, and it was excellent. I'm really happy that we were able to finish it off."

Head Coach Meredith Civico on the team's third shutout of the season:

"Our backfield is an absolute strength. It's been anchored by our captain Linde van Schaik, with Kerrie Burns and Daphne Groothuis up the middle. I've been really impressed by two freshmen, Abby Regn and Milena Redlingshoefer, starting at outside back, those two are not playing like freshmen. And Gianna Glatz has been outstanding in goal. We have a lot of confidence in that group."
