Men's Soccer Falls to Northwestern

Wildcats Net Two First Half Goals in RU's 2-0 Loss

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern denied the Rutgers men's soccer team's quest to put together back-to-back Big Ten wins defeating the Scarlet Knights 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Martin Stadium on the banks of Lake Michigan.
 
MATCH SUMMARY
  • The Wildcats captured both goals in the first half and managed to keep RU away from the net in the second half.
  • Northwestern's Jose Del Valle captured the game-winner in the 11th minute with a header under the cross bar from six yards out off the pass from Matt Moderwell from the left corner.
  • The Wildcats added in an insurance goal prior to the intermission. In the 44th minute, Logan Weaver controlled the thru ball along the left endline to get into goal for the 2-0 Northwestern lead.
  • Rutgers' first half chance came from freshman Jackson Temple as his strike was blocked a top the 18 in the 20th minute. The Scarlet Knights also saw a Pablo Ávila restart from the far side of the field bend towards the Wildcat net but curve wide of the right post with six minutes left in the opening stanza.
  • Another Ávila serve early in the second half from the left side of the midfield allowed a Jake Longo header on frame, but was stopped by Wildcat keeper Miha Miskovic in the 57th minute.
  • RU also had a late chance by Kyle Galloway scooped up by Miskovic with three minutes remaining.
KEY STATS
  • Northwestern improved to 6-7-1 overall and 2-3-1 in Big Ten play, while Rutgers dropped to 7-4-3 overall and 1-4-1 in league play.
  • The Scarlet Knights were outshot 8-3 in the match. While the Wildcats held a 5-1 advantage in the shot column in the first half, the two squad were more even in attempts in the second half with Northwestern holding a slight 3-2 edge in the final 45.
  • Both teams registered four corner kicks apiece.
  • The Wildcats' Miha Miskovic picked up two saves in the shutout, while outside the two goals, the rest of Northwestern's attempts were off frame.
