Men’s Lacrosse Excels in Academics
Oct 23 | Men's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse strives to cultivate a culture of success both on and off the field. The team has continued to validate that notion with its recent performance in the classroom, as the student-athletes has excelled academically.
Last week, the NCAA released its annual Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report. The Scarlet Knights excelled, with a program record score of 97. That mark was the highest of any Big Ten men's lacrosse school. With this success, the men's lacrosse program helped Rutgers Athletics set a school-record in GSR score.
Another program record was set in May with the release of the Academic All-Big Ten team. The Scarlet Knights were represented by a record 24 student-athletes, including two four-time recipients, three third timers and seven second time honorees.
In June, the Scarlet Knights set a program record as five seniors were recognized as Scholar All-Americans by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). Adam Charalambides, Mark Christiano, Max Edelmann, Garrett Michaeli and Kyle Pless were honored for their dedication and commitment both on the field and in the classroom.
In July, Rutgers had four student athletes recognized as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars: Max Edelmann, Kieran Mullins, Mark Schachte and Jack Thompson. It was the second career recognition for Mullins, Schachte and Thompson, while Edelmann and Thompson posted a perfect 4.0 GPA.
The team excelled overall in the spring semester, setting a program record for team GPA. 39 of the 50 student-athletes finished the year with over a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
The team's academic success has come at an elite university that has continually been recognized as one of the top in the nation. Rutgers was recently ranked as the 22nd best public University by US News & Education, while the Business School was ranked as the top Public Business School in 2018. Rutgers continues to invest in education, as the team will move into the Gary and Barbara Rodkin Academic Success Center in 2020, which will feature an academic center that includes an environment to support academic advising, learning specialists, one-on-one group tutoring as well as workshops and seminar, team study halls and computer labs and an expansive lounge area to foster peer-to-peer learning among student-athletes from all sports.
"Our student-athletes continue to set records, both on the field and in the classroom, and that reflects a cultural commitment to succeed as Scarlet Knights," said Director of Athletics Pat Hobbs. "We are very fortunate to have academic support and coaching staffs invested in the personal and professional development of the young men and women we serve. Every day we are proud of our student-athletes, and every day we are given even more reason to be so."
