SAHALEE, Wash. - Women's golf is tied for third with a 305 score after the first round of the 11-team Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, played Tuesday at Sahalee Country Club. The Scarlet Knights battled temperatures in the low-to-mid 40's, intermittent rain and two weather delays to enter Wednesday's final round one stroke out of second place and eight strokes off the pace.
"It was a challenging day for us out on a demanding golf course," said head coach Kari Williams. "We got off to a slow start but battled back to close out the round with some hard-fought pars and a few birdies. The leaderboard is still tight with 18 holes to play tomorrow and we'll look to come out ready to compete."
Senior Carrie-Ann Lee, sophomore Maeve Rossi and freshman Anna-Maria Diederichs are tied for seventh in the 60-player field after carding 75s on the par 72, 5,970-yard course.
"I drove the ball well off the tee, which gave me confidence as the fairways are fairly narrow," said Diederichs. "It was a big advantage to be positioned in the fairway, and I was able to make a lot of pars through the tough weather conditions."
Diedrichs and Rossi counted 13 and 12 pars, respectively, to keep RU within striking distance against a strong field comprised of teams from the Pac 12, Big Ten and Big West Conferences.
"The cold and rain made for a challenging round today," said Rossi. "I avoided big mistakes, and was happy with my short game and putting, and that helped me make many pars throughout the day."
Playing in first position, Lee registered three birdies and is minus-one on par five holes.
Juniors Eun Won Park and Harriet Allsebrook round-out the RU scorecard. Park is tied for 39th with an 80 and Allsebrook is tied for 55th with an 84.
Rutgers is one stroke behind tournament host Washington and is tied with Sacramento State, while ahead of BYU, Long Beach State, Idaho, Seattle, San Francisco, Cal Poly and Nebraska. UC Davis is atop the leaderboard with a 297. UCD's Rei Nakatani and Seattle's Kimberlee Tottori are tied atop the leaderboard at even-par 72.
Due to weather conditions, the 54-hole event has been reduced to 36 holes, with the final 18 to be played on Wednesday. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat.
