Women’s Golf Earns 3rd Place Finish at Sahalee
Oct 09 | Women's Golf
SAHALEE, Wash. - Women's golf placed third with a 609 (305-304) total in challenging conditions at the 11-team Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, played Tuesday and Wednesday at Sahalee Country Club. The Scarlet Knights battled temperatures in the low-to-mid 40's on both days to finish just two strokes off the pace in a field featuring programs from the Pac 12, Big Ten and Big West Conferences.
Freshman Anna-Maria Diederichs' strong play continued in just the fourth tournament of her collegiate career. Playing in fifth position, she tied for fourth in the 60-player field with a 149 (75-74).
"Anna-Maria put together a great event for us and battled hard today to make birdies and close out her round," said head coach Kari Williams. "We had a few mistakes early in the round, but the team continued to compete and held our position on the leaderboard. We were in contention right up until the closing holes and still finished ahead of several ranked programs. We'll have a week at home to practice and prepare for Delaware to close out our season."
Diederichs was even on par threes and minus-one on par fives, while counting five birdies on the par 72, 5,970-yard course. Her performance tied for the best among freshmen in the tournament.
"My driver wasn't as reliable today, but I hit my irons well to give myself decent chances on the greens," said Diederichs. "I had many putts come close today and was happy to hole two birdies to finish off my round."
The Scarlet Knights compiled 17 birdies and 104 pars to finish one stroke behind second place UC Davis and two strokes behind event champion BYU. RU placed ahead of eight programs, including tournament host and No. 24-ranked Washington.
Four Scarlet Knights carded top 20 performances, including sophomore Maeve Rossi, who tied for ninth with a 151 (75-76). She was minus-one on par five holes and had a team-best 25 pars to earn her initial top 10 finish of the fall.
Boosted by five birdies, senior Carrie-Ann Lee tied for 16th with a 154 (75-79), while junior Eun Won Park tied for 20th with a 155 (80-75).
Junior Harriet Allsebrook tied for 49th with a 166 (84-82) to complete the team scorecard.
The Invitational was scheduled for 54 holes, but was reduced to 36 due to multiple weather delays on day one.
Rutgers returns to the links for the Blue Hen Invitational, Oct. 19-20 in Rehoboth Beach (Del.), its fifth and final tournament of the fall.
