Harper Jr. Named Met Player of the Week
Dec 17 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers men's basketball sophomore Ron Harper Jr. was named Met Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday by the Met Basketball Writers association.
Harper Jr. averaged 12.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks in leading Rutgers to two wins last week. The Scarlet Knights started the week with the first Big Ten win of the season over Wisconsin (72-65), then downed in-state rival No. 22 Seton Hall 68-48 to capture the Garden State Hardwood Classic Trophy.
In the victory over Seton Hall, Harper Jr. scored a game-high 18 points along with six rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block to claim Joe Calabrese Game MVP honors. The 20-point triumph produced RU's largest margin of victory in school history over a ranked team and the largest margin over the Pirates since 1998. The win came in front of 8,329 onlookers, largest for a game at The RAC since 2002.
Against Wisconsin, Harper contributed a balanced output of six points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. With the two victories, the Scarlet Knights remained undefeated (8-0) at home this season.
A native of Franklin Lakes, N.J., Harper Jr. leads the team at 12.6 points per game and is second in averaging 6.4 rebounds. The product of Don Bosco Prep is the first Scarlet Knight to capture Met Player of the Week honors since Corey Sanders earned the accolade on December 19, 2017. That week, Sanders also earned the Joe Calabrese MVP trophy in leading RU to a home win over Seton Hall.
