Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 8 Men's Lacrosse Edged by No. 19 Army

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - No. 8 Rutgers men's lacrosse battled No. 19 Army to the wire, falling 10-9 to the Black Knights. Kieran Mullins led the Scarlet Knights with three goals, while Adam Charalambides had two. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Max Edelmann had a career-high 17 saves in his 2019 debut in the cage.

The Scarlet Knights had a 37-32 advantage in ground balls and won 13-of-23 faceoffs. RU was undone by 20 turnovers compared to Army's 11. Army was 18-of-18 on clears while Rutgers was 24-of-28.

Also scoring for the Scarlet Knights were Casey Rose, Owen Mead, Mark Schachte and Cole Daninger. Alex Schoen was 11-of-14 on faceoffs with nine ground balls. Garrett Michaeli, Jack Stahanczyk and Max Edelmann each had five ground bals.

"We lost a one-goal game to a top-20 team," head coach Brian Brecht said. "Give credit to Army, that's a pretty good team. I like our team. But there's a lot of very good teams out there. So there's no guarantees when the whistle blows. Max Edelmann had 17 saves in a one-goal game. We needed all of those. He's been a big part of our success. But you look at the turnovers, we had almost twice as many as them, that's a lot of missed opportunities."

Kieran Mullins scored twice in the opening minutes, pushing Rutgers out to a 2-1 lead. But Army countered with a four-goal run to take a 5-2 lead. Cole Daninger cut into that deficit, but the visitors extended their lead to 7-3.

The Scarlet Knights had a late run in the opening half. Owen Mead, Mark Schachte and Casey Rose all tallied in a 92 second span, as Rutgers cut the defict to 7-6 heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, neither team scored for the first 10 minutes. Then Army had two goals to take a 9-6 lead.

RU came back, scoring the next three as Mullins completed his hat trick, then Adam Charalambides tallied his two on the day consecutively, tying the game at 9-9 with 10:25 remaining. The game would remain even until the 3:54 mark, as Army scored to take a 10-9 lead.

The Scarlet Knights had the ball late, but were unable to find the back of the net with two shots in the waning minutes. With the victory, Army now leads the series in the second-longest played rivalry 58-22-1.

Next up, the Scarlet Knights will host No. 2 Loyola on Saturday, Feb. 23. That game will begin at 2 p.m.
