COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Feb. 17, 2019) – Rutgers softball (4-6) took a lead into the sixth inning before Liberty (4-6) posted a four-run frame to take the Texas A&M Invitational finale, 5-3, on Sunday at Davis Diamond.
The Scarlet Knights had active runners on base with season-high marks of six walks drawn and four stolen bases, but couldn't overcome a season-low .083 team batting average, including an 0-for-9 day with runners in scoring position.
STANDOUT STATS
- Freshman starting pitcher Corah Price kept the Scarlet Knights in the lead for the majority of the game during her five innings of work. The rookie allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while not permitting a walk and striking out two.
- Sophomore third baseman Myah Moy was the only Scarlet Knight with each a hit, a run and an RBI, going 1-for-2 and adding a walk.
- Sophomore Madyson Cole managed Rutgers' only other base knock, a pinch hit in the sixth.
THE RUNDOWN
- Rutgers manufactured a 1-0 lead in the second when left fielder Hailey Hoklotubbe and Moy pulled off a double steal and forced a throwing error, which allowed Moy to score.
- Liberty tied it in the top of the third with an unearned run on a sacrifice fly after benefitting from a Rutgers error to begin the inning.
- RU took a 3-1 lead in the home half of the third without a single hit. Freshman second baseman Aleah Marra and junior right fielder Anyssa Iliopoulos drew walks, and junior first baseman Nicole Bowman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sophomore Erin Collins was promptly hit by a pitch following a pitching change for an RBI, then Moy drew a bases-loaded walk for the two-run cushion.
- After a Liberty leadoff single in the top of the sixth, Rutgers went to the bullpen. The Flames kept the foot on the gas with three more hits to score four runs and take a 5-3 advantage into the final frame.
