Rising junior makes her third appearance at World Championships
GREAT BRITAIN – Rising Rutgers junior rower Ella Toa was picked to represent Great Britain on the Under 23 National Team at the 2019 World Rowing Under 23 Championships on July 24-28 in Sarasota, Fla. Toa will row in the women's quadruple sculls.
Toa previously competed at the World Championships on two occasions as a member of the New Zealand National Team. She rowed the quadruple sculls in 2015 at the Junior World Championships and the double sculls in 2017 at the Under 23 World Championships.
A two-time Second Team All-Big Ten selection, Toa was a key member on last year's team which advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in 18 years. She helped Rutgers to its first-ever Big Ten Boat of the Week honors in 2018 and added two awards during the 2019 season.
Toa was named a Second Team All-American in 2019, following one of the best seasons in program history. The varsity eight claimed four ranked wins over the season leading to team's first-ever appearance in the USRowing/CRCAC Coaches Poll. Rutgers spent nine-straight weeks in the national polls, closing out the season ranked 11th overall.
The Scarlet Knights also captured the Charles Willing Jr. Trophy at the Eastern Sprints, marking its best team finish at the event. In addition, Rutgers posted its best showing in program history at the Big Ten Championships, finishing fourth in the team standings. RU earned the program's first Big Ten medals with second and third place finishes in the second varsity four and third varsity four, respectively.
