Scarlet Knight takes first at World Championship in back-to-back years
SARASOTA-BRADENTON, Fla. – For the second year in a row, a Scarlet Knight earned a gold medal at the Under 23 World Rowing Championships as rising Rutgers junior Ella Toa took first place rowing for Great Britain this past weekend.
Toa joined Lola Anderson, Molly Harding and Lucy Glover to lead a six-team field with a winning time of 6:31.800 to take the 2019 Under 23 World Rowing Championship in the women's quadruple sculls.
Sarah Johanek, a 2019 graduate who earned a gold medal at the 2018 World Rowing Championships, took fourth place in the women's pair on Saturday. She and Irwin Hadley rowed a time of 7:24.060 to finish just behind Russia in third, South Africa in second and first-place Greece.
Toa previously competed at the World Championships on two occasions as a member of the New Zealand National Team. She rowed the quadruple sculls in 2015 at the Junior World Championships and the double sculls in 2017 at the Under 23 World Championships.
A two-time Second Team All-Big Ten selection, Toa was a key member on last year's team which advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in 18 years. She helped Rutgers to its first-ever Big Ten Boat of the Week honors in 2018 and added two awards during the 2019 season.
Toa was named a Second Team All-American in 2019, following one of the best seasons in program history. The varsity eight claimed four ranked wins over the season leading to team's first-ever appearance in the USRowing/CRCAC Coaches Poll. Rutgers spent nine-straight weeks in the national polls, closing out the season ranked 11th overall.
