Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

RV/No. 19 Women’s Soccer Defeats CCSU 2-1 in Overtime

PISCATAWAY, N.J – Rutgers women's soccer won its season opener in dramatic fashion, taking a 2-1 overtime victory over Central Connecticut State. Amirah Ali scored both goals for the Scarlet Knights, equalizing the game in the second half and then providing RU with the golden goal in overtime.

"We knew that we had to just push through," Ali said. "This is what all of our preseason has been about, we work to get our fitness in to be able to play in these types of games for ninety minutes and even more. That's what we did here, we stuck together and got it done."

QUICK STATS

Rutgers held the advantage in all statistical categories throughout the match. The Scarlet Knights outshot the visitors 18-6, including 11-2 in shots on target. RU held a 7-0 advantage in corners and held possession for 60% of the game, including 62% of that possession in the offensive end of the field.

THE MATCH

CCSU, the defending Northeast Conference champions, scored first 11 minutes into the game. The Blue Devils sent a cross from the right side and finished a volley from the front of the net. Rutgers held an 8-1 advantage in shots in the opening frame, but were unable to score.

In the second half, Rutgers had a good chance 10 minutes into the frame, but a shot from Taylor Aylmer hit the top woodwork and deflected away.

With 20 minutes left in the second half, the home team equalized. A foul in the box gave the Scarlet Knights a penalty kick, and Ali stepped to the spot and capitalized. She sent a strike into the right corner of the net to even the game at 1-1. That will be all the scoring in regulation, sending the game to an extra session.

As the team's starting overtime, the weather intensified, forcing the squads to play through a driving rainstorm. Five minutes into the OT, RU capitalized on a chance for the game-winner. CCSU mishandled the ball in the backfield, and Amirah Ali gained possession and fired the game-winning goal into a vacated net.
