PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 21 Rutgers field hockey battled a top-ranked team to the wire, but was edged 1-0 on a second half goal by No. 9 Delaware (5-0). The game was the third straight contest against a ranked opponent for the Scarlet Knights and the fourth in five games.
KEY STATS
- The Blue Hens led 11-6 in shots and 5-3 in corners.
- Gianna Glatz had three saves for the Scarlet Knights.
- Austyn Cuneo had three of the six Rutgers' shots.
QUOTABLE
"We moved the ball pretty well and created opportunities through the midfield, we just fell short in the attacking circle. We need to really focus on our finishing. We did some things well, we just weren't able to execute cleanly, which was disappointing, because I thought we did a really good job preparing for this opponent, we just weren't able to capitalize and execute under the pressure."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams battled evenly for most of the contest, with a lot of intense play in the midfield and contested action, with neither team able to break a scoreless tie heading into halftime.
Late in the third quarter, Delaware finally broke through on a penalty corner. The initial shot was saved, but Sophie Giezeman was able to knock in the rebound. The Scarlet Knights pushed for an equalizer, but were unable to convert.
