Scarlet Knights look for 3-0 start to begin 2020
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's lacrosse (2-0) returns to Piscataway to host Delaware (0-0) on Saturday at SHI Stadium. The noon matchup will stream live via BTNPlus, with Lou Brogno and Ralph Bednarczyk on the call.
Parking Information
The Rutgers Department of Transportation Services (DOTs) employs a Virtual Parking Pass system on campus. While parking for non-ticketed sports, including women's lacrosse, is free of charge, guest event parking will require a one-time, online registration per sport good for an entire season (August - May). Fans will be able to collect their 2020 women's lacrosse team poster upon entry to SHI Stadium.
Last Time Out
Erasing a three-goal deficit late in the second half, the Scarlet Knights defeated Temple, 13-11, on Wednesday in Philadelphia in their last time out. The win signaled the first 2-0 start for RU since the 2014 season. The win snapped a five-game losing streak to Temple, with the last victory over the Owls also coming in 2014.
Down 11-8 with 15 minutes to play, Rutgers closed the game on a 5-0 scoring run, including the game-winning strike from junior Taralyn Naslonski in the closing minutes to secure the victory. Rookie Cassidy Spilis led the way with a career-high four goals, while Naslonski contributed a hat trick to go along with her season-high five points. Naslonski needs just three more points (67 goals, 30 assists) to become the 25th player in program history to reach 100 points for her career.
Senior captains Samantha Budd and Dakota Pastore also registered multiple goals for the Scarlet Knights. Rookie Jenna Byrne contributed three points (2 A, 1 G) and junior Julia Lytle added a tally off the bench to help RU to its non-conference road win.
In the back-and-forth affair that featured multiple lead changes, Rutgers forced Temple into 20 turnovers. In just her second collegiate contest, rookie Alonna Gliksman recorded a game-high 12 saves, including eight stops in the second half for her second consecutive victory.
Scouting Delaware
Saturday marks the first game for the Blue Hens in 2020, as they finished 7-10 last season. Delaware was selected to finish fourth this season in the CAA Preseason Coaches' poll. Amy Altig enters her first season has head coach of the program after serving on staff at Penn State for the past nine seasons.
The Blue Hens feature 2019 First Team All-CAA midfielder Mia DeRuggiero, who broke the program's 35-year-old school record for single-season assists (53) a year ago and posted the most points (73) for the Hens since 1994. DeRuggiero was named to the 2020 CAA Preseason Team.
Julia Dambly and Kelsea Konz return on the defensive side for Delaware, a unit that ranked third in the CAA in 2019 with just over 10 goals allowed per game. Kate Brewster returns in cage after she finished 2019 with a 10.95 GAA to go along with 123 saves and 36 ground balls.
Series History
Delaware leads the all-time series, 17-13, but Rutgers has won the past two meetings between the schools. Last season, the Scarlet Knights erased a five-goal deficit en route to a 12-11 overtime victory over the Blue Hens on Feb. 23, 2019 in Newark. Then rookie Marin Hartshorn tied the game with less than a minute to go in regulation, while Naslonski netted the winning goal off a free-position attempt in overtime. RU also won its meeting against Delaware in 2018, 14-10, in Piscataway.
