No. 17 Men's Lacrosse Hosts St. John's Saturday Afternoon

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - No. 17 Rutgers men's lacrosse will host former BIG EAST rival St. John's on Saturday. The game will be part of a double-header, following the women's lacrosse game. Attendance for the women's game is free, while ticketing for the men's game will begin at 2 p.m. The game will stream on BTN Plus with Lou Brogno and Rick Mercurio on the call, while WRSU (88.7 FM) will have a radio broadcast, with Jake Schmied and Robert Baxter on the call.

RU is 1-0 on the season following a 20-9 throttling of Quinnipiac. Rutgers had 13 different goal scorers in the game, their most since having 14 in a 24-4 win over Wagner in 2010. The offensive outburst was led by Kieran Mullins (seven points), Ryan Gallagher (four goals), David Sprock (three goals) and freshman Ross Scott (two goals). Mullins was named to the USILA Team of the Week. On the defensive end, LSM Ethan Rall had three caused turnovers and four ground balls, and was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. Goalkeeper Stephen Russo made his Rutgers debut with 12 saves, and at the faceoff 'X' Palmer Lloyd was 16-of-26. Rutgers held a 58-32 advantage in shots, 41-31 in ground balls, and was 20-of-23 on clears and 2-of-4 on man-up. The shot total was the highest number for the program in over 14 years. The Scarlet Knights debuted three new starters, with Russo, a Cleveland State transfer, between the pipes joining defensemen Zach Masessa and Jaryd Jean-Felix. Michael Sanguinetti made the third start of his career at midfield alongside Tommy Coyne and David Sprock.

St. John's will open their 2020 campaign with this matchup. Mike Madsen was named to the 2020 BIG EAST Presason Team following a 25 goal, 22 assist season last year. SJU went 4-10 overall, highlighted by a ranked win at No. 11 High Point. The team will also return leading goal scorer Joe Madsen and goalkeeper Brody Agres (12.84 GAA, .487 save percentage as a freshman in 2019).

Rutgers holds a 21-7 advantage in this all-time series. The Scarlet Knights have won the last six contests dating back to 2014, as every player on the current Rutgers roster is undefeated in their careers against the Red Storm. The combined margin in those six games is 92-63. Last season, a game marked by wild scoring runs saw the Scarlet Knights score the last seven goals of the game for a 19-15 road win. The Scarlet Knights were led by six goals from Kieran Mullins. Adam Charalambides had four goals, while Tommy Coyne had three and Cole Daninger had two. Another notable performance came in 2016, when Adam Charalbmides scored six goals against the Red Storm in his first collegiate game. Both head coaches played collegiate lacrosse together at Springfield College in Massachussets, overlapping for two years.
