Reed Crowned Danish Cup Champion
Jul 09 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Former Rutgers women's soccer centerback Brianne Reed has been crowned 2020 Danish Cup Champions with FC Nordsjaelland. The club won in the Pokalfinale on July 4th in Thisted, Denmark, capturing a 1-0 shutout of FC Thy/Thisted Q for the title.
The Danish Cup, which allows teams from all divisions, is a tournament style competition with single game elimination. Reed and the squad registered huge upsets on the way to the title, including a 1-0 shutout of Brondby in the quarterfinals and a 2-1 victory over Fortuna Hjorring in the semifinal. Brondy and Fortuna Hjorring have dominated Danish women's football and were the only teams to win the cup since its inception.
Reed is the starting left centerback for the Denmark club, having played in and started the majority of matches throughout the championship run. She joined FC Nordsjaelland, which competes in the Denmark's top league of Gjensidige Kvindeliga, in 2019. The Tinton Falls, New Jersey, native was drafted to the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in 2016 to FC Kansas City before heading overseas in 2017 to first compete in Sweden.
The Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient is no stranger to Championship games, having guided RU to the Big Ten Championship finals and the program's first ever NCAA Final Four in 2015. Overall, she pushed the Scarlet Knights to four NCAA Tournaments and two conference finals during her collegiate career.
Reed, the 2015 Senior CLASS Award winner, All-American and two-time All-Big Ten honoree, anchored the squad to its most storied season in school history that 2015 campaign. Reed lifted the team to a nation-leading 19 shutouts and a No. 4 national ranking in the NSCAA Coaches Poll, concluding the year with the historic College Cup appearance.
Also in 2015, Reed and the team established program records for wins (19), home wins (13) and fewest goals allowed (10). Behind Reed's guidance, the Scarlet Knights captured a perfect 7-0 nonconference mark and over 770 minutes of holding the opposition scoreless.
Reed is one of 13 currently active Scarlet Knights across various pro leagues, including the NWSL, Canada, and overseas. Rutgers has recorded 28 student-athletes entering the professional ranks following their time "On the Banks".
