Senior forward earns nod on prestigious watchlist for second straight season
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior forward Amirah Ali has been named a candidate for the MAC Hermann Trophy, United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club announced Thursday. The captain earns her second recognition on the list, having been tabbed a semifinalist in 2019.
The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year's award was pushed back to accommodate the seasons affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Winners will be announced May 27 at the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Press Conference and Banquet taking place at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.
Ali, a two-time All-American and three-time All-Big Ten recipient, was recognized as a semifinalist last season for the award after posting nine goals and four assists. Her performance helped lift RU to a second-place finish in the Big Ten for a second consecutive campaign. Of Ali's four game winners on the year, three came in overtime to solidify her as the program-leader with eight career golden goals.
The Voorhees, New Jersey, native helped push RU to its eighth straight NCAA Tournament, 10th in the last 12 seasons, and 14th time overall in 2019. On the conference side, Ali guided the Scarlet Knights to their sixth straight Big Ten Tournament since joining the league in 2014, advancing to their third Big Ten semifinal.
The 2017 Big Ten Freshman of the Year has started all 62 games since her arrival "On the Banks" in 2017, tallying a total of 62 career points (25g, 12a). Her name is etched across the Rutgers career and single-season charts. She ranks eighth in career points (62), seventh in career goals (25), fifth in career game winning goals (10), and first in single season overtime goals (4).
In the classroom, the criminal justice major is an Academic All-Big Ten honoree. She is a two-time team captain entering the 2020-21 season.
Ali notched the program's 11th recognition on a MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and fourth in the last six years. A total of eight different Scarlet Knights have earned the honor across the 11 lists, as Ali joins Gina DeMaio (2009, 2010) and Carli Lloyd (2004, 2002) with a nod in multiple years. Ali became the third semifinalist in program history, joining Lloyd (2004) and Casey Murphy (2017).
The senior forward was recently drafted into National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) by Portland Thorns FC and will finish her final collegiate season this spring before heading West. Ali and the Scarlet Knights begin the season on Saturday, Feb. 20 at home.
